Wicked in New York – Good for Kids?

It is important to make the right choice when you take your kid or kids to their first Broadway show for the first time. Make the wrong choice and they will be put off theatre for life, you want the visit to be magical, enthralling and most of all fun. What broadway shows are good for kids?

Kids are introduced to the world of entertainment from an early age through mother reading bedtime stories and the childrens TV shows that has them glued to the screen and there is nothing nicer than the sound of childish laughter as they spot something funny.

Wicked Poster What age you introduce a child to live theatre is equally important as there is nothing quite like a live show but they must be old enough to understand what they are seeing and not get bored as Broadway shows tend to be two hours plus.

It is a good idea to take the kids to a live show specifically for youngsters before you buy tickets for a show on the Great White Way suitable for all the family. They will learn how to sit still, not to talk like they probably do when they watch television and how to concentrate on what they are watching.

When they reach the age of seven or eight-years-old you can start looking for a Broadway show that would be a suitable introduction to live adult theatre. As soon as you book their ticket get them interested and encourage them to get excited about what they are going to see, in other words give them a good incentive to go. Make sure they understand the story of the show before they go or even better take them for a fun outing at the weekend to a show where they already know who the characters are.

An excellent choice for a child’s first visit to Broadway is Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre. It tells the previously unknown stories of some of the most famous characters from the famous 1939 Judy Garland movie The Wizard of Oz. There are not many children who have not watched the film on television or seen the DVD.

Wicked takes you on a fantasy journey through the wonderful world of Oz before Dorothy arrived to seek the Wizard. It features Glinda the beautiful blonde good witch and the green-skinned Elphaba, the wicked witch. Glinda and Elphaba were college room-mates and Glinda started life as a poor little rich girl while Elphaba only became wicked after suffering life-changing events as she attempted to stand up for injustice and tried to right the wrongs of the past.

After getting the kids very excited about going to the show they will not be disappointed. The show is stunning with great sets and costumes and tremendous special effects. They will love the flying monkies and witches and will have a really fun time. Once they have gone down the yellow brick road to Oz they will be hooked on live theatre for life.

The most important thing about a fun outing for all the family is to choose something the whole family will enjoy, not drag them along to something because you want to go., Perhaps it is Mum and Dad’s first visit to a Broadway show as well, in which case it will b e a really fun and exciting weekend outing.
