American Express – The Best Card for Live Entertainment?

American Express has a long and storied history of providing it’s card-members with early access to tickets for Concerts, Sporting events and Theatrical productions. Ticketmaster has a whole page devoted just to the special offers you can access with your American Express card.

But what if you don’t have a card yet?

To take advantage of an American Express Presale you generally need *any* valid and current American Express card – this includes Gift cards and prepaid cards. Entering the customer service number from the back of your card into Ticketmaster/Livenation in the American Express Presale box should allow you to access tickets before the public to a wide range of events. In some cases you may not even need to take that step, but instead will choose “American Express Offer” as the type of tickets you wish to purchase – the system will show you the seating that is still available at that point.

Gold Cards and Platinum Cards

There are some events, most notable “Gold Card Events” that are only open to Gold, Platinum and Centurion card members. These offers can get you even closer, and if you’ve got the right card in your wallet you’ll be able to access blocks of tickets that may otherwise be out of reach to the public. I’ve seen tickets in the first 10 rows of major concert tours, and in a few cases I’ve even seen “sold out” shows with a small inventory of seats available to American Express  card members who hold the Platinum or Centurion cards.

What’s the right American Express card for you?

For many of us this comes down to a question of cost: American Express has no-fee cards, cards that carry an annual fee, and cards that are only available by invitation. If you travel frequently, find yourself needing last minute dinner reservations and don’t mind paying an annual fee, The Platinum Card might be the right card for you: I’ve had one since 2006 and I must say that their Concierge service has helped me on a few occasions.

If you’re like most people, a regular Green card might be best – there is no pre-set spending limit on Charge cards, but they must be paid in full each month. There are even some prepaid cards which can be used in situations where you might want a prepaid card (for a student away from home for example).

American Express Perks

American Express members can collect Membership Reward Points using many of the cards – these points can be exchanged for *almost* anything, including travellers cheques, tickets, or a new blender.
